Growing up in Zimbabwe with little exposure to soccer news, soccer clothing, soccer accessories, the latest fashion etc. my only way to satisfy myself was playing soccer in the dusty streets with my friends and collecting pictures of soccer stars and pictures of big teams in the magazines. The posters I would stick them on my bedroom wall.
A Short Story About My Soccer Passion
As a young boy growing up in the 80`s and 90`s, soccer was the only sport that was available in communities with limited resources. After school and on weekends, my friend and I had to improvise by making small soccer pitches and mark goal posts by 2 sticks or 2 rocks.
Soccer accessories and fashion was not in our vocabulary. To distinguish the teams, 1 team would remove shirts and the other team would keep the shirts on. Few rules would apply in such a set up. No referee, no lines man. The ball was made out of plastic bags. The matches in most cases did not have a time limit.
Playtime could go on until we were tired or simply when it gets dark of maybe a team member is called for lunch or dinner. In most cases we would call ourselves names of soccer heroes from the local league to international players. Maradona, Pele and more.
I bought a lot of magazines to make sure that I was up to date with the latest trends.
World Cup were always a marvel. All major soccer tournaments were just exiting for me.
Sudden change and my help.
The world of soccer has drastically changed from our time as kids. There is now satellite TV, live streaming, VAR ,goal line technology, improved accessories, the latest fashion.
